Ben Stokes father Ged Stokes dies at 65 after battling Cancer

Ben Stokes’s father Ged Stokes has passed away after his long battle with brain cancer. Ged was 65 at the time of his demise. The news was announced by the Workington Town rugby league club. He was a part of the club during the 1982-1983 seasons as a player and returned in 2003 as a Coach.

The club shared the news of their beloved player and coach in great grief. This is a huge loss to the Stokes family and to the sports world as well. He was a renowned sportsperson in both hemispheres.

The club also stated his name is written into the rich fabric of Town history. And, he will be missed forever.

The former rugby player was diagnosed with illness earlier this year. He spent more than five weeks in a hospital in Johannesburg. He returned to his Christchurch home with his wife Deborah, with whom he was living till his death.

The family has been going through tough times since January this year from the moment Ged was diagnosed. During the Test series between England and Pakistan, Ben was given indefinite leave to spend time with this family in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Ben stated the tough times he and his family are facing bidding farewell to his beloved father who was his role model since childhood. The family is supporting each other as the best they can to overcome this phase of grief and pain.

There were many stances in which Ben cited his father’s influence in his life and playing career. Every time he achieved a milestone in the field, he would give away a three-fingered salute to his father who had finger amputation during his rugby league days.

Condolences are pouring on social media from all parts of the world for the family. We have our prayers for Ged’s family and friends.
