Those of you who don’t regularly follow cricket might have recently heard about the Border Gavaskar Trophy, which was won by the Indian cricket team at Gabba. If you want to know more about this prestigious tournament and its history, then you have come to the right place. Border Gavaskar Trophy is a yearly test cricket series. The series is named after veteran Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar and Australian cricketer Allan Border. They were chosen as namesake for this trophy since they both had a great test career and were captains of their respective teams at one point in time.

If we talk about some of the current records established in this trophy, then India has been the most successful team in this contest as they have a record ten titles in total. The most significant number of runs scored by an individual batsman have been 3262 in total, and this was accomplished by the God of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar. The most significant number of wickets taken by an individual bowler has been 111 by veteran Indian bowler Anil Kumble.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 1996-1997

This was the first edition of the trophy, and just one Test was played under it. Interestingly though, it was Sachin Tendulkar who was the Indian captain. The only was played in Delhi. The Australians had won the toss and had decided to bat first. Thanks to the Indian bowling attack, they were stopped at 182. Then the Indians scored 361 runs in their first innings. Nayan Mongia scored 152 runs in this innings. In response to this in their second innings, the Australians scored an average total of 234 runs. Team India then easily achieved the set target of 56 runs.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 1997-1998

India won this edition too by 2-1. In the first Test, India won by a record 179 runs at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Sachin Tendulkar played a memorable inning of 155 runs facing 191 deliveries. Anil Kumble was the bowling star who took four wickets each in each innings of the Australians. The second Test was held in Kolkata, West Bengal. This Test too was won by the Indian cricket team by an innings and 219 runs. Azhar scored 163* runs in this Test. The third Test while was won by the Australians by eight wickets in Bangalore, Karnataka. Kumble took a six-wicket haul in the first innings of the Australians.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 1998-1999

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 1999-2000

In this edition, India got severely whipped by the Australians as they lost by 3-0. All the three test matches of this series were played in Australia as contrary to the first two editions of the trophy. The first Test was held in Oval, which was won by Australia by 285 runs. Steve Waugh played an innings of 150 in the first innings of the Aussies.
India lost the second Test by 180 runs. This Test saw Tendulkar scoring a century in the first inning and a half-century in the second one. But his efforts didn’t bring any fruit. India lost the final Test by an innings and 141 runs.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2000-2001

Australia was touring India in this series, and they lost the series by 2-1. In the first Test, Australia won by ten wickets. Sachin Tendulkar scored half-centuries in both innings. Adam Gilchrist also scored a century.

The second Test, held in Kolkata, was won by the Indians by 171 runs. VVS Laxman was the man of the match as he scored 59 runs in the first innings and 281 runs in the second one. In the third Test, meanwhile, India won by a narrow margin of just two wickets. This match was held at the Chennai cricket ground in Tamil Nadu.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2003-2004

This series was drawn as both the cricket teams managed to win a match (1-1). In total, four test matches were organized. First Test was held at Gabba, which was drawn. Sourav Ganguly and Justin Langer smashed centuries in this Test. The second Test was won by four wickets by the Indians. Dravid was the star performer with 233 runs and 72* runs in both innings. The third Test, meanwhile, was won by the Australians by nine wickets. Virender Sehwag‘s 195 knocks and Ponting’s 257 runs innings were the highlights. The fourth match, which was held in Sydney, was again drawn and hence was inconclusive.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2004-2005

Australia had won this series by 2-1. The first Test, which was held in Bangalore, was won by the Australians by 217 runs. Michael Clarke made his test debut and scored 151 runs in his very first innings in this match. The second match at Chennai was drawn. Anil Kumble took 7 and 6 wickets in both innings and was hence declared the match man. The third Test, meanwhile, was again won by Australia by 342 runs. India managed to win the last Test by a very narrow margin of 13 runs thanks to Harbhajan Singh‘s performance.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2006-2007

No test series under the title was conducted in this time frame.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2007-2008

Australia again won this series by 2-1. The first Test, which was held in MCG, was won by the Australians by 337 runs. India lost this particular Test because of its weak batting. Matthew Hayden was the only player who managed to score a century.

The second Test, too, was won by the Australians by 122 runs. In this match, India performed well in the first innings but crumbled in the second one. The third Test, meanwhile, was won by India by a narrow margin of 72 runs. The fourth Test got drawn, meanwhile, as both teams managed to score some grand totals.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2008-2009

The Indians won this series by 2-0. The first Test, held in Bangalore, was drawn, and surprisingly, Zaheer Khan scored a half-century in this match. In comparison, India won the second Test by 320 runs thanks to their more substantial scores. MS Dhoni was named as the man of the match. The third Test, which was being held in Delhi, got drawn because of both teams’ enormous total put up. This was the last Test for Anil Kumble. India won the fourth and the last Test by 172 runs as Harbhajan Singh managed to take seven wickets in total.

This series, too, was won by the Indian cricket team by 2-0. India, in the first test match, won by a very narrow margin of a wicket. Aussies had won the toss and had decided to bat first. They scored 428 runs in response, to which the Indians too scored 405 runs. Australians then set a target of 216, which India heroically achieved thanks to VVS Laxman.

In the second Test, India managed to win by seven wickets. Sachin Tendulkar played superb innings of 214 runs facing 363 bowls. In all, just two test matches were only played in this edition of the trophy.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2011-2012

Australia routed India in this series as they won all four matches of the series. In the first game, they won by 122 runs. The poor performance of the Indian batsmen became the reason for their loss. Only Sachin Tendulkar managed to put up some resistance. In the second Test, Australians inflicted a humiliating defeat of an innings and 68 runs. Michael Clarke‘s 329* was the highlight of this Test. They won the third Test by an innings and 37 runs. While in the fourth Test, they won by 298 runs. Ricky Ponting‘s 221 runs and 60* runs in the first and second innings, respectively.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2012-2013

This series was clean swept by the Indians by 4-0. The Indians won the first Test by eight wickets. MS Dhoni scored 224 runs in the first innings and was also declared the match man. In the second Test, the Indians won by an innings and 135 runs. Cheteshwar Pujara was the star performer because of his innings of 204 runs. Indian bowlers also saved the day by performing exceedingly well. Six wickets won the third Test. Australia could have given a fight had they managed to score big in their second innings. In comparison, the 4th Test was won by six wickets.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2013-2014

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2014-2015

Australia won this series by 2-0. In the first Test of the series, the Australians won by a slim margin of 48 runs. Virat Kohli managed to score a century in both his innings, but his contribution couldn’t help India win the match. While in the second Test again, Australia won by a narrow margin of 4 wickets. India might have won the match had they set a bigger target. In comparison, the third Test was drawn as both teams scored high in their first innings. The last match of the series too was drawn due to the reason which we mentioned above.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2015-2016

No test series under the title was conducted in this time frame.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2016-2017

India won this series by 2-1. The first Test, which was held in Pune, was won by 333 runs by the Australians as the Indians failed miserably to score a decent score in both their innings. In the second Test, meanwhile, India managed to win by 75 runs. This was since Australia’s batting line up collapsed in the second innings. The third game got drawn, and Ravindra Jadeja was the highlight as he took nine wickets in total in both innings. The Indians won the last Test by eight wickets, and Ravindra Jadeja again contributed heavily as he scored crucial runs as well, and he took some wickets.

India won this series as well by 2-1. The first Test, which was being held in Oval, was won by India by 31 runs. Cheteshwar Pujara was the hero of this match as he scored 123 runs in the first innings and 71 runs in the second innings. The second game, meanwhile, was won by the Australians by 146 runs. It was Nathan Lyon who managed to decimate Indian innings by taking eight wickets in total. The third Test, meanwhile, was won by India by 137 runs. Bumrah took nine wickets. The fourth and final Test, meanwhile, was drawn.

– Border Gavaskar Trophy Season 2020-2021

India again won the series by 2-1. The Australians won the first game by eight wickets. India had control of the match, but then it put a total of 36 in its second innings, and the whole match went out of his hands. The second Test was payback time for India as they managed to defeat Australia by eight wickets. Rahane scored a century, and debutant Siraj took three wickets in this match. The third Test, meanwhile, was drawn, and rain affected the play of day one. Steve Smith was the man of the match due to his excellent batting performance.
