Players Who Scored Triple Century In Test Cricket

The England batsman, Andy Sandham was the first-ever cricketer who has made the triple Century in Test Cricket against the West Indies in 1930. On 30 November 2019, Australian batsman David Warner scored 335 runs against Pakistan and became the 31st cricketer who has achieved the 300 run milestone in Test Match across the world.

Quick Facts about Triple Century Scorers

Brian Lara (West Indies), Donald Bradman (Australia), Chris Gayle (West Indies), and Virender Sehwag (India) have achieved the 300 run milestone on more than one occasion.

Brian Lara still holds the first position in the world record of the highest individual score in Test Series. He has scored 400 not out in 2004 against England. Lara is also the only player who has scored over 350 runs twice.

Wally Hammond (England) has scored the quickest triple-century in 4 hours and 48 minutes against New Zealand in 1933.

Virender Sehwag (India) has scored the fastest 350 in 278 balls against South Africa in 2008.

 Out of 31 centuries, 29 have been secured in the first innings of the Test Series except for Brendon McCullum (New Zealand) and Hanif Mohammad (Pakistan) who are the only players who have secured 300 runs in the second innings.

Out of 12 nations who play the ICC Test Series, only 4 countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ireland, and Zimbabwe have never scored 300 run milestones.

The Highest Triple Century Scorer: Australia

Australia is at the top of the chart scoring the triple centuries for 8 times. On 11 July 1930, the Australian batsman, Donald Bradman scored 334 runs against 448 balls in the first innings against England at Headingley, Leeds. He hit 46 fours and helped set the target of 566.

On 20 July 1934, Donald Bradman again achieved a score of 304 in the first innings of a Test series against England at Headingley, Leeds. He hit 43 fours and 2 sixes and achieved over 300 in 473 balls.

Bob Simpson has scored 311 runs against England in the first innings at Old Trafford, Manchester in July 1964.  Bob Cowper secured 307 runs against England in 1966 in Melbourne Cricket Ground.

In October 2003, Matthew Hayden became the second-highest triple century scorer with 380 runs in 437 balls (38 fours and 11 sixes) against Zimbabwe.

The Second in line: West Indies

On 26 February 1958, Garfield Sobers secured the first triple century for his country with 365 runs (highest at that time) against Pakistan at Sabina Park, Kingston.

Lawrence Rowe scored 302 runs against England at Kensington Oval on 6 March 1974.

Both Brian Lara and Chris Gayle have crossed over 300 runs twice. Lara scored both 375 runs in April 1994 and 400 runs in April 2004 against England has always remained at the highest during the time, however, Lara’s 400 is till-date the highest score in Test Series.

Chris Gayle has once scored 317 runs against South Africa in April 2005 at Antigua Recreation Ground, St John’s, and 333 runs against Sri Lanka on 15 November 2010.

England takes third place

England has secured 5 Triple Centuries since 3 April 1930 when Andy Sandham became the first-ever cricketer who achieved a 300 run milestone against West Indies at Sabina Park, Kingston.

In 1933, Wally Hammond scored 336 runs against New Zealand in the second innings of the test match at Eden Park, Auckland.

Len Hutton who has scored 364 runs in 847 balls against Australia has helped England win the innings by 579 runs at The Oval in August 1938.

In 1965, John Edrich played against New Zealand and secured 310 runs (not out) Headingley, Leeds.

Finally, on 26 July 1990, England batsman Graham Gooch smashed 333 runs against India at Lord’s Cricket Ground, London.

The fourth country with 4 Triple Centuries: Pakistan

On 17 January 1958, Pakistan secured its first triple century against West Indies in the second innings of the format. Hanif Mohammad has scored 337 runs at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown.

In 2002, Inzamam-ul-Haq scored 329 runs against New Zealand Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Younis Khan secured his title in the triple century record book with 313 runs in 568 balls against Sri Lanka at National Stadium, Karachi.

The fourth Pakistani cricketer, Azhar Ali scored 302 runs in 2016 against West Indies and won Pakistan the innings by 56 runs.

Sri Lankan Cricketers

On 2 August 1997, Sanath Jayasuriya scored 340 runs with 36 fours & 2 sixes in 578 balls in the first innings against India at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. 

Mahela Jayawardene secured his position in the triple century holder record on 27 July 2006. He scored 374 runs with 43 fours in 572 balls against South Africa at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo.

The third Sri Lankan player who has scored over 30 runs in the first innings of the test match is Kumar Sangakkara. He scored 319 runs against Bangladesh in February 2014 at Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong.

Indian Cricketer

Virender Sehwag has scored triple centuries two times. Firstly, on 28 March 2004 at Multan Cricket Stadium, Multan, scored 309 runs against Pakistan in only 375 balls. He smashed mind-boggling39 fours and 6 sixes which helped India win the innings by 52 runs. Secondly, he scored remarkable 319 runs in just 304 balls against South Africa at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 26 March 2008.

Recently, on 16 December 2016, Karun Nair has made India Team proud by scoring 303 runs against England at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium.

The one-time Triple Century Holders: South Africa and New Zealand

On 18 February 2014, the great former New Zealand captain, Brendon McCullum achieved 300 run milestones in the 2nd innings of the Test series against India at Basin Reserve, Wellington. With four sixes and 32 fours, he acquired his individual score of 302 runs in 559 balls, however, the match ended in a draw.

The South African cricketer, Hashim Ali who has registered his name in the record book of triple century holders in this format has scored 311 runs (not out) against England in the first innings. At The Oval, he hit 35 fours and his efforts have won South Africa the innings with 12 runs.
