Why Rohit Sharma is known as a Hitman? I Cricketfile

Rohit Sharma with his commendable performance and consistently scoring centuries in ODI as an opener since he has been promoted at the top-order. Since 2013, he has scored above 7000 runs in 137 ODIs including 3 double centuries, 27 centuries, and 31 half-centuries. He has acquired the first position among opening batsmen. He also did an exceptional job as the vice-captain of the limited-overs side, having guided the team to Asia Cup and Nidahas Trophy in 2018.

The 33-year old Indian opening batsman is renowned as the best hitters in the world. Sharma earned his fifth ODI century and subsequently, his best career score in 2013 against Australia during their seventh visit to India. With phenomenal 16 sixes and 14 fours, he smashed 209 runs and defeated team Australia on 2 and November 2013 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

It was his second century of the series and first ‘One Day International Double Century.’ At that time, when Rohit Sharma headed for the flash interview after the sensational victory, a broadcaster called him as ‘Hitman’ for unstoppably smashing runs from his bat. He became the player of the series for scoring 491 runs and was also awarded the man of the match.

However, this nickname didn’t come to the limelight then, recently, Rohit Sharma cleared the confusion that his nickname has nothing to do with WWE wrestler ‘Bret the Hitman Hart.’ This was a part of a hilarious discussion with Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in an Instagram live session.

At the session, he revealed that his nickname became more famous when he reached the double ton, and then commentator Ravi Shastri used his nickname Hitman. Sharma smashed a six when he was at 197 to complete his double century.

The words that came from Ravi Shastri’s mouth: “What a way to bring up 200 in One Day Internationals, they call him Hitman and he has arrived at the party.”
